Decapitated Internally: A 2 Year-Old’s Miracle Healing After A Car Crash

Precious Micah was only two years old when he suffered an internal decapitation after a car accident. In the words of his neurosurgeon, “This is the worst injury we could imagine.” One skilled neurologist advised the most humane option would be to discontinue care. John and Heather suddenly found themselves in a crucible where their faith would be tested and ultimately sustain them. - Julie

My name’s John Andrews, and I’ve got a testimony to share about my son, Micah, that’s both harrowing and hopeful.

It all began on what seemed like an ordinary day, a day that quickly took an unexpected and nearly tragic turn for our family. I was at work, planning to sneak in some fishing afterwards since I had my boat with me. Heather, my wife, was out shopping with a friend instead of the usual Wednesday church visit with the kids. They were all buckled up in the car, safe and sound, or so we thought.

On their way back home, our world turned upside down. Their car was hit broadside at 50 miles an hour. The impact was on Micah and Heather’s side. As fate would have it, I drove past the accident scene without a clue that my own family was involved. I was just hoping the delay wouldn’t be too long.

Not long after, I got a call. It was a firefighter telling me to rush to the hospital. He tried to reassure me by saying, “We did everything we could.” You hear that, and your heart just sank. I couldn’t fathom what lay ahead.

When I arrived at the hospital, the reality of the situation hit me like a ton of bricks. Micah had been internally decapitated—a term I wish I never learned. It means his skull was detached from his spine, a condition as grim as it sounds. The doctors, they weren't optimistic. They said 98.5 percent of people with this injury don’t make it, and the lucky few who do... well, they’re typically paralyzed and wheelchair bound. Christopher Reeves was one of those miracle cases.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Heather and I, we just couldn’t give up hope. There was this unshakable feeling inside both of us that Micah was going to pull through, that God was watching over him. And so began our vigil by his bedside, day in and day out, praying, hoping, believing. Heather reflected back to the scene with gratitude how God clearly led her to gently hold up Micah’s head in alignment. We knew He was with us.

Everyday Miracles: 32 Real First-Hand Testimonies that Reveal God’s Miraculous Power

Dr. Theodore, God bless him, was the surgeon who took on Micah’s case. He performed this incredible surgery, attaching Micah’s skull back to his spine with a piece of titanium and a bit of Micah’s own rib. It was groundbreaking, and it was our first glimmer of hope. Dr. Theodore was the world-leading expert for this surgery. He developed the surgery.

In the days that followed, we clung to every positive sign, no matter how small. The first news after surgery was that Micah was paralyzed and we, have to wait to see about his brain function. It was brutal. I have always been taught to have faith, that God is in control, but I was so afraid to fully surrender my child to God in fear that God’s will would be to take him. There were moments of despair, sure, but there was a big moment that we knew God was sending us a sign of hope.

The neurologist came to share the negative results of the brain scan and the damage that had occurred. One of the residents in tow met eyes with my father-in-law, “Alex?!” The resident replied, “Craig?” The resident was a doctor from Slovakia who Craig met as a child in a youth group at a church he planted years ago in a small Slovak village. Alex was the one believer on that medical team. We all instantly knew, given the odds of this reunion, that God is sovereign and so completely in control! Alex would pray with us and this became the pivotal moment where things started to change for the better. I finally surrendered Micah to God, trusting His will, that He is in control after this confirmation of His presence.

They told us our son would be paralyzed and that his brain would likely have severe permanent damage. They wanted to arrange for a wheelchair. My wife Heather had not left the hospital and was at her lowest point when God sent a nurse. This woman set aside everything and prayed heaven down to Earth over my wife. It was the most incredibly powerful prayer my wife had ever heard. It was a perfectly timed blessing she will never forget. God kept prompting me to keep our eyes on Him, not the waves of our storm. He kept sending people into our path to comfort and support us.

On day twelve they decided to try to wake Micah and we were praying, hanging on to hope for any kind of activity. He opened his eyes. It was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. His first response was he growled and was not himself, but he briefly drew up his limbs. We were simultaneously bawling and ecstatic. He wasn’t paralyzed! Later I whispered ‘diaper’ to Micah, a silly family inside joke, and he grinned. That grin was everything. It was Micah telling us, ‘I’m still here.’ It was the first real sign that his brain was working. He had so much to overcome, but this was a major victory.

Micah's recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Slowly but surely, he defied every odd stacked against him. He started moving, responding, and before we knew it, he was on the path to recovery. It wasn’t easy, mind you. There was therapy, lots of it, and there were setbacks, but Micah, he’s a fighter. And all along the way God sent people to bless us.

Five or six months later, Heather and Micah were walking to rehab through the hospital skybridge when they met the eyes of the skilled neurologist and his team. A non-believer, this was the same doctor who had advised us to discontinue treatment for Micah. Micah smiled and reached out his hand to say hello and the doctor was speechless as he realized who he was. “God is good,” Heather shared warmly. We are hopeful that Micah’s miracle may have opened this talented doctor’s mind and heart for God to move in his life.

Dr. Theodore, the outstanding surgeon God provided for Micah, is a man of faith. Reflecting on Micah’s journey, he shared with the family, “I may have fixed Micah’s neck, but I didn’t heal him. Miracles happen every day,” giving God the glory. We will be forever grateful for the medical care we received from everyone.

Looking back, I see how this journey tested our faith, reshaped it, even. It showed us the power of hope, the strength that comes from a community rallying around you, and most importantly, the unwavering love of a family. So many say that God won’t give you more than you can handle. Well, I can tell you that He will at times give you way more than you can handle. He wants you to rely on and trust in Him. You have to learn to lean on Him and walk by faith and not by sight.

Today, Micah’s doing great. You wouldn’t know what he’s been through just by looking at him. He’s on track with school, loves shooting hoops, and has this zest for life that's infectious. Sure, there are challenges, but when I look at Micah, I see a living, breathing miracle.

Through every step of this journey, we’ve witnessed the profound impact of God’s grace. It's a force that’s difficult to articulate but impossible to ignore. This grace didn’t just guide the surgeon’s hands or spark the first signs of Micah’s recovery; it was present in every moment of despair, offering us strength when our own was waning. In the darkest hours, it was God’s grace that reminded us we were not alone, that our prayers were heard, and that even in the face of overwhelming odds, there was a path forward. It taught us that grace isn’t just about miraculous healing; it’s found in the support of our community, the resilience of our son, and the unwavering bond of our family. God’s grace showed us that even when the future seems uncertain, faith can illuminate the way through any storm. Micah’s story, marked by both hardship and hope, is a testament to the boundless grace that surrounds us, teaches us, and ultimately, transforms us.
